New research suggests that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the jabs report a intense return of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
